Pillar 4Testimonials (evidence)

To date we have helped 50 children in our immediate community with donations equivalent to R500 000. Our impact in the area is continually growing. Here are some of the stories of the lives we have impacted.

Extending a helping hand to Christina Kiddie child and youth care centre

Christina Kiddie is a child and youth Care centre, situated in Kimberley, Northern Cape. This centre provides a safe and loving home to approximately 30 vulnerable children and orphans. The children range in age from 4 to 18 years. The Mia van Reenen Foundation had the privilege to extend a helping hand in 2023 to these beautiful kids and provide hope and dignity by supplying each child with a new pair of school shoes (soft-soled shoes for the preschoolers), a brand new “Boomerang” rolling school bag, as well as a year’s supply of school stationary. This was ‘n very special project for us, as Mia van Reenen was personally involved at Christina Kiddie during the last few years of her life. It was an emotional moment for us as well as ‘Tannie Frieda’, the House Mom of the centre at the time, when we handed over the packs. ‘Tannie Frieda’ thanked us by saying “Our children were able to start the school year with so much pride thanks to your open hearts and hands.”

Enabling the joy ofMusic in Kimberley

The Kimberley Academy of Music (KAM) is home to the Kimberley Children’s Choir. This choir annually competes in the KCC Cantamus competition, which takes place in George, Western Cape. The Mia van Reenen Foundation was honoured to support three learners in 2023 with their tour fees, enabling them to compete, grow and experience new challenges. Estelle Vorster, the choir conductor, expressed her gratitude in the following way: “This kind gesture allowed the full choir to be part of this wonderful experience, which promotes choral education in Kimberley.”

Supporting struggling families by helping children shine

The MVR Foundation is passionate about improving the lives of children from single-parent households or from homes that have suffered setbacks:

In 2022 a fifteen-year-old boy lost his mother due to illness and his father struggled to pay the medical bills given his basic salary. The boy showed immense potential on the rugby field. We knew we wanted to help! We have been helping the family by paying school fees and for sports tours, as well as supplying the boy with school clothes and sports gear, like rugby boots. We also ensure that he receives at least one meal per day. By investing in this family, we hope we have altered the trajectory of the boy’s life for the better.

In 2023 we also stepped in and supported a struggling single mom with three daughters, aged 10, 12 and 15, who could not afford to pay school fees. These girls are all top academic achievers in their grades, despite facing financial difficulty. Their wonderful school testimonials confirmed our decision to support them by paying their school fees.

A family tragedy struck when a 15-year-old boy’s father died suddenly, and his mother struggled to come to terms with the loss. Given the sudden changes, it was decided that the home was not the best environment for the boy to thrive. We stepped in and with the permission of his mother, arranged that the boy stayed in the school hostel during the week – where he would get to school punctually, attend his rugby practices on time, as well as be surrounded by friends and teachers who could provide him with their support. We provided the financial assistance required for this change, supplied him with school clothes and covered the costs of his sports tours. By helping this child, we also helped the mother to have the time and space to recover from the loss. She has since been able to get back on her feet. A great example of how we helped an entire family recover from a setback.
